Escherichia coli (E. coli)

Some strains are harmless, but pathogenic strains can cause food poisoning, leading to symptoms like stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting.
Often comes from raw meat, unwashed vegetables, and food waste.

Salmonella

Causes salmonellosis, leading to fever, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps. It's a leading cause of foodborne illness.
Commonly found in bins containing raw meat, poultry, and eggs.

Listeria

Found in bins containing raw meat, poultry, and improperly stored cooked food.

Pseudomonas Aeruginosa

Can cause infections, especially in people with compromised immune systems, including skin, respiratory, and urinary tract infections.
Found in moist environments, such as bins that contain liquid waste or are that are not properly drained.

Staphylococcus Aureus

Can cause skin infections, respiratory infections, and food poisoning.
Present in waste that contains organic material, particularly if it has come into contact with human skin or bodily fluids.

Bacillus Cereus

Causes foodborne illness, leading to symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea, especially in bins that aren't regularly cleaned.
Present in waste that contain cooked rice, pasta, and starchy foods.

(Aspergillus, Penicillium)

Mould spores can lead to respiratory issues and allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
Found in organic material, including food waste that begins to decompose.

Maggots and Fly Larvae

While not a bacteria, maggots are indicative of poor hygiene, and the presence of flies can further spread bacteria.
Results from flies laying eggs in the decomposing organic material in bins, which then hatch into maggots.
